What to Expect During Your First Few Weeks

Every person's experience is different.

Many participants notice changes gradually over the first several weeks as their body adjusts.

You may notice:

  • Feeling full sooner
  • Eating smaller portions
  • Less frequent hunger
  • More stable appetite throughout the day
  • A reduction in cravings

These changes are expected and often become more noticeable over time.

Common Side Effects

Some people experience mild side effects when starting a GLP-1 medication or increasing their dose.

Some people experience side effects when starting a GLP-1 medication or when increasing their dose. Most of the time these side effects are mild and can be managed effectively. Side effects are generally most common in days 1-2, especially in the morning of those days, and fade by days 3-7.

The most common include:

  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Heartburn
  • Upset stomach
  • Fatigue
  • Mild injection site reactions

These symptoms are often temporary and improve as your body adjusts. It is important to allow the body to acclimate and manage side effects before advancing the dose. This will ultimately be a conversation between you and your prescribing provider.

How long before I notice results?

Everyone's journey is different. While a majority of participants will experience appetite changes and gradual weight loss over time, recent studies and real world evidence show 5% of participants lose less than 5% which is about 1 in 20.1,2 And 20-30% lost less than 10% in similar trials.1,2 Nevertheless, 5-10% weight loss is still meaningful and can result in significant health improvements. It's important to reach out to your provider when you're unsure if your weight loss over time reflects the best response to treatment. Your provider can make adjustments as needed.

Do I still need to focus on nutrition?

Absolutely.

As your portion sizes decrease, prioritizing nutrient-dense, high-quality foods is essential for maintaining your overall health and wellness.

Medication works best when paired with healthy eating habits, movement, coaching, and regular communication with your care team. Lifestyle changes also improve health beyond weight loss alone.

Will my dose change?

Possibly.

Your provider will monitor your progress and determine whether dose adjustments are appropriate based on your individual response. This will greatly depend on the interplay between side effects, adequate nutrition, and weight loss trajectory.
